May 2018 – Project Dedication

Rotarians from the Rotary Club of  Oklahoma City Rotary Club traveled to Latvia in May to participate in the Global Grant project dedication at Jaekapils Maternity Hospital. While there, Larry Stone and Mary Jane Calvey helped lay flowers on the Peace Memorial commemorating Latvia’s one hundredth anniversary as a country. Latvia regained independence from the former Soviet Union in 1989 and originally became a separate country in 1918 after the end of World War I. A fiercely independent people they recounted to visitors their efforts to keep their culture and traditions alive during the time of Nazi and then Russian occupation. Situated in the center of the Balkans on the Dauga River and near the harbor on the Gulf of Finland, this small country (about 1 million people) appreciates partnerships with Rotary Clubs in Sweden, Estonia and now,
Oklahoma.

The Northwest Oklahoma City Rotary Club contributed toward this project as did clubs from the above mentioned countries. The regional hospital serves a population around the Dauga River in the eastern part of the country and equipment purchased for this project includes birthing beds, neonatal intensive care equipment and baby warmers.

From Latvia, Ron Sutor and Tami Murphy, and Clayton Taylor
joined the group in Berlin, Germany to meet with Rotary Clubs
from Warsaw, Berlin Luftbrueke, Berlin Central and Milano
Nord to discuss potential projects both in their countries and in
Africa. Rotary Club of Oklahoma City  partnered with the
Warsaw Club on “A Very Good Start” literacy project in Poland
last year. That project is expanding successfully and now
includes on-line components for instructors in dispersed areas.
Watch for more updates about possible projects in Europe and
Africa available because of these partnership opportunities.
