Born in the Washington, D.C. Suburbs of Maryland, Randy received the Bachelor, Master and Doctors degree in Music from the University of Maryland on scholarship and full fellowship.

He became professor of music at the College of Charleston in South Carolina in 1974 where he headed the instrumental music division. While in Charleston he was principal clarinet and assistant conductor of the Charleston Symphony, Music Director of the Charleston Opera Company and Music Director of the Spoleto Festival All-State Youth Orchestra.

Randy came to Bartlesville in 1985, became a Diaconal Minister in the Oklahoma United Methodist Church and serves at Bartlesville First Church. In 1998, he became a full-time professor of music at OKWU, serving as Department Coordinator, Humanities Division Chair, Associate Dean for Academic Assessment and Vice President for Development until retiring in 2011.

On May 1, Dr. Thompson retired from FUMC after 30 years of service at that church and 55 years as a church organist.

Dr. Thompson has been Executive Director of OK Mozart since September 2013.

He has been married to his lovely wife Sherry for 43 years. Sherry is a retired Physical Therapist whose passion was working with special needs children and families. They have 4 daughters ( Debbie Hite Stewart is eldest daughter) a total of 15 grandchildren. 12 plus 3 brand new bonus children they gained in Debbie’s recent marriage to Jeff Stewart.
