December 2016 Teacher of the Month
Putnam City Schools 2015 Teacher of the Year, Ms. Carla Young.
Pictured with Superintendent of Putnam City Schools, Dr. Fred Rhodes, Carla was chosen for this award because of her commitment to children, her commitment to leadership, and her commitment to excellence.
Her recognition of the unique needs of each child, and willingness to be goofy with them creates a safe space where children feel comfortable asking tough questions, knowing they’ve got an adult on their side. Carla regularly attends school events in which her students participate because she knows that building strong relationships with students is the foundation of their academic success and reveals her commitment to them.
Carla is a building leader at Putnam City West, having served as the science department chair for over 10 years, and leads the entire staff in monthly professional development on the Marzano evaluation model used in our district. She has completed over 300 hours as an administrative intern, giving her additional facets of leadership which benefit her students.
Carla is committed to excellence. She is yet another example of a teacher who is willing to put in more than just an 8 hour day to improve her school community and her students’ lives. She has a master’s degree in ESL, and though that is not what she teaches, it increases her effectiveness in the classroom greatly. She spends her summer month at Advanced Placement courses and other professional development opportunities to further enhance her skills.
