As District Attorney in Muskogee I was elected by my peers to be President of the Oklahoma District Attorneys Association. As such I presided over meetings of the Association as well as the District Attorneys Council. As Attorney General I was chair of the southern region of AG’s and was elected President of the National Association of Attorneys General. These positions required that I preside over meetings of those regional meetings and then NAAG. In my view, a presiding officer should be warm and courteous, and even humorous, but the meeting must run on time and cover all agenda items.

Serving as the CEO for a nonprofit organization which centers around improving children’s policies through state and federal action has provided me with a view of the obstacles faced by many Oklahomans. In working with elected officials and advocates from around the state, it is vital to bring multiple perspectives together to attempt to reach the optimal solution for problems. Oftentimes, these individuals are as far apart as you can get on their ideas with how to make things better, so it is important to have those “lived experiences” people around the table so as little is missed as possible.
