Erik Edens, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Erik Edens is the Medical Director of Heart Failure and Transplant at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital OU Health Heart Center in Oklahoma City. He specializes in pediatric heart failure, heart transplant, and mechanical circulatory support.
In September 2021, Dr. Edens came to Oklahoma to build the advanced pediatric heart failure and heart transplant program at Oklahoma Children’s Hospital OU Health.
Dr. Edens earned his doctorate of medicine from the University of Iowa Medical School and his doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. He completed his pediatric residency and cardiology fellowship at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
Throughout his career, Dr. Edens has held several significant positions, including the first medical director of the Pediatric Heart Transplant Program at the University of Iowa and an ICU attending. He also worked at Arkansas Children’s Hospital as a transplant physician and immune tolerance researcher. In early 2018, he joined Children’s Minnesota to start the pediatric heart transplant program.
His research interests focus on immune function in heart failure and innovative immune strategies following heart transplant.
Outside of his professional work, Dr. Edens enjoys remodeling projects, playing golf, and following college sports.
