It’s Noisy Out There!

Freda Deskin, Ph.D.

Noise surrounds us. It comes in many forms—the constant churn of political debate at local, state, and national levels; sensationalized headlines that prey on fear; worries about what might happen; and the everyday chatter that pulls our attention away from what truly matters. For Rotarians committed to service above self, this noise can be more than an annoyance. It can distract, demoralize, and even paralyze our efforts.

Noise is not always trivial. Some issues deserve our attention, and some stories demand a response. The challenge is discerning which sounds require action and which simply clutter our mental landscape. When every alarm is treated as urgent, nothing can be prioritized. Our mission-driven work—supporting education, promoting health, fostering peace—requires clarity, focus, and steady commitment. Allowing every loud voice to set our agenda undermines that work.

Compartmentalization is a practical skill, not avoidance. It means intentionally allocating time and mental energy to different concerns so that important tasks receive the attention they deserve. It might look like setting specific windows to catch up on news, turning off notifications during committee meetings, or creating short daily routines for reflection and planning. Compartmentalizing helps prevent the spillover of anxiety from one area of life into another, ensuring that fear about an uncertain future doesn’t erode the present work we can accomplish.

Equally important is the restorative power of stepping away. Rotary has long been a refuge from the din. Our weekly meetings—often just an hour—allow us to connect with like-minded people who share values, goals, and a commitment to positive change. Those gatherings do more than inform; they renew. Hearing about successful local initiatives, volunteering side by side, and celebrating tangible outcomes remind us why we serve. That uplift matters: it reconnects us to purpose and provides energy to face challenges without becoming consumed by them.

We should also practice selective engagement. Not every headline demands a response; not every controversy warrants a position from our club. Prioritizing issues that align with Rotary’s values and our community’s needs ensures that our efforts have maximum impact. When we do choose to engage, we do so thoughtfully—grounded in facts, respectful of differing viewpoints, and focused on constructive outcomes rather than noise-driven reactions.

Encouraging one another to filter the noise is part of our responsibility as Rotarians. Mentoring newer members on how to balance civic awareness with mission-focused action, sharing strategies for digital wellness, and inviting reflection during meetings all strengthen our collective resilience. Leaders can model this by setting meeting agendas that emphasize progress and by celebrating service milestones that highlight what we’ve achieved together.

Noise will always be with us. But it need not dictate our agenda. By discerning what truly matters, compartmentalizing our attention, stepping away to recharge, and leaning on Rotary’s community for perspective, we can remain focused on service. In doing so, we ensure that the work we do—not the loudest voices—shapes the legacy we leave in our communities.
